Getting citations into EndNote from the Connection Files

With the Connection Files, you can search databases and library catalogs from within EndNote.

CAUTION: Connection files are useful for quickly getting a known item into your EndNote library. However, for subject searching, we strongly recommend searching the database directly in order to take advantage of the database's searching capabilities.

  1. Open an existing EndNote Library or create a new one.
  2. EndNote 9/X: from the Tools menu, select the Connect submenu, and select Connect…
EndNote X1: from the Tools menu, select the Online Search submenu, and select New Search…
  3. From the Choose a Connection File window, select the appropriate connection file and click Choose.
  4. If you are asked for a Remote Password , leave the fields blank and click OK . Exception: for CSA databases (e.g., ERIC), enter your PawPrint information in the UserID and Password fields, leaving the Group ID field blank.
  5. In the Remote Search… window, enter your search terms and click Search.
  6. In the Confirm Remote Search window, click OK.
  7. At this point, the references are not in your EndNote library. Notice that the title of this window is the database searched (e.g., PubMed MEDLINE at PubMed[NLM]). Select the references you want to transfer to your EndNote library and click Copy Reference(s) To... and select your EndNote Library.

Note: if a Connection File doesn't work, check the EndNote Web site for updated connection files or search the database itself and export references into EndNote.

Choosing a Connection File

Not every database has a connection file, and—due to library subscriptions—not all connection files available in EndNote work at MU. The choice of a Connection File depends upon the Information Provider MU uses.

Example: to search MEDLINE, choose the MEDLINE (OVID) connection, not the MEDLINE (OCLC) connection.
