Getting citations into EndNote from PubMed

In PubMed, you will need to save your citations as a .txt file and then import them into PubMed using a filter.

  1. If you have not already done so, create an EndNote library. (You can also put the citations in an existing EndNote library.)
  2. Search PubMed as you normally would.
  3. Use the check boxes to mark the items you wish to export to EndNote. You can send the items to the Clipboard for later downloading using the Send to drop-down menu.
  4. When you are ready to download (or from the Clipboard), change Display to MEDLINE.
  5. Choose File from the Send to drop-down menu (you may need to turn off pop-up blocker).
  6. Save the file to your desktop as a .txt document.
  7. In EndNote, choose File > Import.
  8. Under Import Data, browse to find your .txt file.
  9. If you do not see it on the drop down screen, click Other Filters. Then choose PubMed (NLM).
  10. Click on Import

The program should do the rest!

Note: When you add references to an existing EndNote library, you will see only the most recent entries. Choose References > Show All References (Ctrl+M) to get back to your entire EndNote library.
